Vietnam exporters using Maersk TPX seasonal service should review their next departure now. The carrier has announced a final sailing from Vung Tau on 29 September 2026, followed by suspension for the remainder of Q4. Confirm the replacement voyage, origin cut-offs and delivery plan before releasing cargo or relying on an earlier quotation.

Maersk TPX Suspension: What Vietnam Exporters Should Do Next
Check whether the booking actually uses TPX; the notice does not suspend every Vietnam–US service.
For affected cargo, obtain a replacement itinerary and a fresh cost breakdown before arranging empty pickup.
Separate US West Coast and East Coast alternatives. A different discharge coast changes the inland delivery calculation.
Give priority to the buyer’s required delivery date when deciding whether to move cargo earlier or use another departure.

What the Maersk TPX Service Suspension Means for Vietnam Exporters

Maersk TPX Last Sailing from Vung Tau

Maersk’s 17 September advisory identifies Maersk Boston, voyage 640E, as the last TPX sailing. Its table gives Vung Tau / 29 September as the first-port proforma departure. The carrier says alternatives will be offered through its existing network; it does not publish a universal replacement itinerary or promise unchanged transit times.

A proforma departure is a planning reference. It is not the terminal gate-in deadline, shipping-instruction deadline or verified gross mass deadline. Those details need to come from the current booking and terminal instructions. Exporters should also verify the terminal rather than treating “Vung Tau” as a truck dispatch address.

Why the Maersk TPX Suspension Matters for Q4 Shipments

The practical effect depends on how much of a shipper’s volume was assigned to the departing service and what space is available elsewhere. Removing one service can reduce suitable departure choices even if total cargo demand softens. The notice alone does not establish the scale of a market-wide capacity shortage.

For an exporter, the useful question is whether an alternative can carry the same cargo, from the same origin, within the customer’s delivery window. A schedule that works for standard dry cargo may not work for overweight, dangerous or temperature-controlled cargo. Acceptance must be checked again when the routing changes.

Three Signals to Review Before Choosing a Replacement Service

The direct Vietnam signal is the withdrawal above. A separate pricing signal comes from Drewry’s 17 September assessment: its Shanghai–Los Angeles and Shanghai–New York spot benchmarks rose 5% and 7% week on week. These are China-origin movements, not executable Vietnam quotations.

Maersk TPX

A third signal concerns operating costs. Reuters reported, citing Ship & Bunker, that the global 20-port average very-low-sulphur fuel oil price reached USD 901.50 per metric tonne on 17 September, compared with USD 543.50 on 27 February. This is a fuel indicator, not a container surcharge tariff.

Interchains’ interpretation is that an affected shipper should validate availability and cost together. A seasonal service withdrawal does not by itself justify a rate increase; equally, a lower headline freight offer does not establish that a suitable replacement sailing exists. These signals support a booking review, not a numerical forecast for Vietnam freight rates.

Compare Your Replacement Shipment from Factory to Receiver

Decision Confirmation needed

Origin Execution and Cut-Offs

Exact terminal, equipment release, empty depot and applicable cut-offs.

Ocean Itinerary and Replacement Routing

Service, vessel/voyage, direct or transshipment routing and current ETA.

Freight Rates and Commercial Scope

Freight validity trigger, included surcharges, origin and destination charges.

US Delivery and Inland Transportation

Discharge port, customs/broker readiness, inland mode and receiver appointment.

Container Free Time and Booking Conditions

Origin and destination free time, cancellation terms and empty-return instructions.

The comparison should use the same cargo-ready date, equipment, weight and final delivery address. Ask the forwarder to identify each changed assumption. Otherwise, a port-to-port quotation can appear cheaper simply because an inland leg or a destination service has dropped out of scope.

Review the Replacement Routing by Vietnam Origin

Southern Vietnam and Vung Tau Shipments

For factories shipping through southern Vietnam, work backwards from the replacement terminal cut-off through trucking, stuffing and export clearance. If a container has already been picked up, ask whether it can remain under the revised booking and how the change affects origin free time. Do not assume an old release order is valid for a new carrier or depot.

Hai Phong Shipments and Alternative Gateways

For Hai Phong cargo, first establish whether the itinerary involves TPX at all. The Vung Tau departure shown in the notice is not a Hai Phong sailing. Moving northern cargo to a southern gateway requires a separate transport, cost and timing assessment; it should not be presented as a routine substitute.

Interchains Insight

A useful replacement offer explains what changes for the customer. It should identify the revised voyage, the cargo handover deadline, the cost items that moved and any delivery commitment still awaiting confirmation. That makes the trade-off visible to sales and procurement, while giving operations a plan it can execute.

Choose the Right Action Based on Your Delivery Deadline

Fixed Delivery Deadlines

For orders with a fixed retail or production deadline, request a workable replacement now and tell the buyer about any change in arrival or inland delivery. Move cargo earlier only if the factory can genuinely meet the revised cut-offs and the commercial terms remain acceptable. Rushing an unfinished shipment can create a second problem without securing the first departure.

Flexible Receiving Windows

For replenishment with a flexible receiving window, compare at least two viable departures. The second option should differ in a way that reduces the same failure risk; two forwarders selling space on one vessel do not necessarily provide independent backup capacity. Avoid duplicate firm bookings unless the cancellation exposure is understood.

Cargo That Is Not Yet Ready

For cargo not yet ready, revise the planning schedule rather than holding an obsolete sailing in the order system. Keep the customer delivery commitment, forwarder booking, truck order and factory loading plan aligned. Assign one person to approve changes and circulate the revised version to the other parties.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Maersk TPX Suspension

Maersk TPX

Does this affect every Maersk booking from Vietnam

No. Start with the service and voyage on the booking. The advisory concerns seasonal TPX, so bookings on other services require their own checks. [A1]

Should cargo automatically switch to a US East Coast port

No. Compare the final delivery location, ocean routing, inland expense and delivery deadline. A change of coast can alter the entire transport plan.

Can an earlier quotation still be used

Only after the quoting party confirms its applicability to the revised shipment, including validity, surcharges, equipment and space.

Is a Vietnam freight increase confirmed

No. This review contains no live Vietnam rate sample and makes no numerical rate prediction. Obtain a current shipment-specific quotation.

Plan Your Vietnam–US Shipment with Interchains

Send Interchains the Vietnam loading point, US discharge port and final address, container type, cargo-ready date, commodity and required delivery date. Include the existing itinerary if a booking is already in place. Our Ocean Freight team can review FCL/LCL options and the origin trucking and customs requirements, then identify which routing and cost conditions need confirmation before cargo moves. Any offer remains subject to carrier acceptance, space, equipment, cargo restrictions, current cut-offs and quotation validity.
